Start early

When they smile, it lights up the room and we’d like their smiles to stay healthy. You can build your child’s confidence and pride in a healthy smile by visiting the dentist before any problems start. With regular visits, the strange sights, sounds, and smells of the dental office become normal. After a few visits, they’ll feel right at home and proud to show their white, healthy teeth.

Children can come as early as one year old for an exam. An early dental exam for 1-2 year olds is fast, easy, and half the price of a regular exam. Children should come two or three times a year so that when they are three years old, we can try cleaning their teeth or simple x-rays.

Early exams, how often

There is no fluoride in the drinking water in Prague and bottled water usually has no fluoride. This means your children are at a higher risk for tooth decay. We recommend children use toothpaste with fluoride twice a day. Fluoride tablets are also available but, studies have shown that fluoride is most helpful when it is applied to the surface of teeth, not when it’s ingested as a tablet. If your child is at risk for decay because they already have fillings or brown spots on their teeth, they should have regular office fluoride treatment. We recommend at risk children have fluoride varnish painted on the surface of their teeth at least twice a year.

Many children (and adults) remember bad experiences at the dentist, they are hard to forget. These children may need extra visits to become comfortable with the dentist. We will do our best to give your child a positive experience and eventually, they will have good experiences that will replace the old ones. Your children will have better experiences if you bring them regularly to the dentist instead of bringing them only when dental problems exist.

Better experiences

We do our best to provide safe and comfortable treatment for your children. We use low dose digital x-rays, white filling material, preventative sealants, and topical fluoride to improve your children’s teeth. During treatment, we will always be checking if your child is comfortable because we know that good experiences build trust.

Children’s treatment

You can help your children’s teeth at home:

  1. Assist with brushing and flossing until 5-6 years of age.

  2. Brush teeth 2-3 times a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste.

  3. Avoid sugar exposure to prevent decay (candy, lollipops, soda, etc).

  4. Avoid dried fruit that can stick between teeth (raisins, prunes, etc).

  5. Avoid sweet juices, syrups, honey, or sweetened milk or tea.

  6. Avoid milk or juice before bed.

  7. Do not allow baby to fall asleep with a bottle. Baby bottle tooth decay.

At home recommendations

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentists recommends children see the dentist as soon as their first tooth erupts and we agree. Early visits for young children are fast and easy and the result is your child becomes more comfortable at the dentist. When they’re older, healthy dental visits will be a source of pride and if any dental treatment is needed, because they are already familiar with the dentist, they will feel more secure.
